Violist Julie Michael specializes in the performance of new music. Julie has collaborated with many composers to commission and premiere new solo viola and chamber works. She has performed throughout Europe and North America as former violist of the Tana Quartet and Amaranth Quartet, and through guest appearances with ensembles including Ictus, Alarm Will Sound and Ensemble Intercontemporain. An engaging performer for young audiences, Julie regularly gives concerts and workshops at schools and children's festivals. Currently based in Brussels, Julie holds degrees from McGill University and the University of Michigan and is pursuing doctoral studies at KU Leuven.

Julie composes pieces for solo viola. Her works, marked by rhythmic playfulness and frequent engagement with text and found objects, have been performed throughout Europe.

As a teaching artist, Julie believes in the power of music to stimulate personal growth and build relationships. Following training in Suzuki and Dalcroze methods, Julie has taught strings at youth programs including Harmony Project SF Bay Area and Share the Warmth in Montreal, as well as a term as visiting professor at the University of Panama.
